Ceiling
Mold ceiling problems are common.
When a
roof leaks or gutters back up during the spring thaw, there is a high
probability of water getting into the house. The water always finds the
lowest point that it can and will pool up atop your ceiling. This
moisture will soon begin growing mold. By the time you notice it there
is a good chance it is thriving in the space overhead.
I have dealt with several mold ceiling problems before you begin the
clean up you must evaluate the total problem. If the attic is above
your ceiling then it becomes a little easier. You will need to pull the
insulation layer up from the ceiling to see how wide spread the
situation has become. You will have already repaired the leak and now
you are looking to get rid of the black mold.
If you have an area of two feet by two feet then you still have what is
considered a small remediation area. If you are in the attic you will
want to make sure that there is ample ventilation and you still may
want to wear a mask. The best way to eliminate this type of mold
ceiling problem is to remove the entire section and replace it. That
way all mold that has burrowed into the media is discarded and out of
the house.
But most people will not go that route because it is a lot of work.
Since that is the way I believe most will opt to do, I'll suggest
cleaning the top of the ceiling with a moldicide. Follow the
instructions on your container to allow for maximum kill time and then
remove. I usually then make sure to put a fan on the spot until it is
bone dry. Your only hope of stopping the mold growth is to eliminate
its moisture source.
Hopefully, since you have elected the easy way, that process will be
the last of the ceiling mold problem you are having. If it begins to
become a problem again, you will definately have to cut the section out
and replace it.
