How to Get Rid of Molds
Mold must be contained, killed and
removed
How
to get rid of molds is a common problem with homes and especially less
ventillated homes
where the windows have been replaced making the house very air tight
and heat efficient. Here's what you need to know about how to get rid
of molds.
Your house needed new windows, doors and siding. You went ahead and
upgraded the insulation too. Now it's been months ago and you suddenly
find yourself asking how to get rid of molds and mildew.
What happened is you sealed up all the leaking windows and doors, which
allowed for a lot of unwanted ventilation and you reduced your heating
bill. Now you find mold is a problem. The ventilation is greatly
decreased and you didn't account for indoor humidity and the need for
air exchanges. The exchange of air form outside actually lowers the
concentration of mold spores floating around in your house. When you
sealed up tight, you kept the mold spores inside too.
How to get rid of molds is easy most of the time, but the above
remodelling scenario happens to a high percentage of people every year.
You've trapped the mold inside your home.
Here's how to get rid of
the molds that are problematic and creating
nuisances right now. Find where you have damp, moist or overly humid
areas in your home. If you think there is no problem then try the
bathroom, kitchen and laundry room. Then you'll find those same
conditions in the basement, attic and crawl spaces.
To eliminate humidity run some sort of air conditioning, fans or run a
dehumidier. In the winter don't allow your indoor humidity to get too
high by using a humidifier. In the bathrooms and kitchen make sure you
have adequate vents and turn them on. Especially turn on the bathroom
vents when in the shower.
Find your most problem prone moisture areas and begin cleaning up the
mold. Look behind the toilet, under the toilet, between the toilet tank
and bowl. Clean up and seal up the shower with proper cleaning and
caulking.
How to Get Rid of Molds in the
Basement
The basement is an interesting place along with the crawl space. Mold
needs adequate moisture, a food source, and the right amount of
light/dark to thrive. That's why you usually find it in hard to reach
and see places. How to get rid of molds is easy when you know where
they hide. The underground areas stay about one temperature all year
long. The air changes temperature within the walls.
Your basement heat and cools the air while the walls stay about 50
degrees. Condensation develops and that's your moisture. The basement
is dusty and that's your food source. The basement is dark with only a
little light and that's your third leg that mold needs to thrive.
You can only control the moisture, so dry it up as much as possible is how
to get rid of molds.
Then clean up the gross mold where ever
possible. Keep at it and eventually your mold problems will go away.
Install the proper appliances to help keep mold away for good.
